Connector Caps

Utilising play to design play by allowing material experiementation to inspire ideation.

Because of their intresting features, specifically their unique connection detail and unrecyclability, I decided to focus on pill bottles as my main material.

Looking at pill bottles as a material. Focusing on cutting and melting to see if the material could be altered to create a mass producable product. Ultimately it was found that would not be possible.

Early Ideation

I had many different concepts in my early ideation stage, as I focused on how to add value to the pill bottle life span. The most sucessful ideations were my more functional ideas like my jump rope. By combining my insertion (the feather) idea and my jump rope idea, I came up with a concept of some sort of connection piece that allowed me to build off of.

This idea was for decorative doll heads. Since it was purely decorative, I did not move forward with it.

This idea was a toy train. It wasn’t very functional so I decided against working with it.

This was the first ideation that sparked connector caps. It was about what could holes allow me to do.

The jump rope function was cool but limiting. It inspired me to imagine what other funtion I could make through attaching to pill bottles.

Iteration

Moving forward a building concept, I began to iterate on the form. I worked between solidworks and 3D printing my models to see the form in person and experiment with it before going back to the software and editing the digital model to reflect what needed changed.

The first models were all about getting the overall form right. Then I worked on the positioning of the holes and slots. Lastly, adjusting the holes and slots to be the correct size to hold, pipe cleaners as well as popsicle sticks.

How its Used

There are different holes and slots in the tool to insert and tie objects to. By using different objects in differnt slots you can make a variety of different configurations.

Using a combination of found and bought items.
